7 factors to consider when choosing a life insurance plan

You might find that life insurance is not as straightforward as you think.

A number of products and solutions can be found positioned as comprehensive packages.

It can be overwhelming, especially when you consider all of the options there are in the market. Making the right choice can get even more confusing if you aren't familiar with certain details or aspects that you should be focusing on.

The intricacies of the life insurance products and policies out there can be subtly different. Essentially, however, they should all serve the same purpose (to help take care of your loved ones and provide monetary support when you’re not around).

There are several things you should consider before signing up for a life insurance package.

The current state of your health

When you apply for a life insurance policy, you should expect the process to begin with a physical exam, medical assessment and related questions. These are meant to help with determining the state of your health.

The healthier you are, the less expensive your insurance policy should be. Certain conditions (such as smoking) can significantly affect amounts.

Required duration

The duration of time that you are considering holding the life insurance policy for, is also something you might want to think about. Policies cover a variety of ranges. Some go as far as 30 years while others are permanent. For this reason, start comparing options before deciding on a plan.

Do your own research online and ask an advisor for guidance.

Payment options

Life insurance policies may also differ with regards to the payment of premiums. You’re likely buying a package so that the policy will support your loved ones in the event of your death. However, policies can lapse and coverage can end if you miss a premium payment. Try to find options that offer automatic withdrawal for policy premiums, so that insurance bills are paid on time and coverage is there when it is needed.

Age

With insurance policies, even basic factors like your gender and age can be taken into account. More options may be available to you if you are younger. You may also be expected to be healthier if you are younger. Some life insurance products end your eligibility to purchase at the age of 60 and above.

Gender

Gender is also taken into account because females tend to live approximately seven years longer than males which translates to less expensive policies for women. Generally, age and gender are basic factors that influence the pricing of insurance premiums.

Affordability

One of the most important things to consider is your affordability in relation to the package you are choosing. Will you be able to keep the coverage in place in the long run? You need to weigh the differences between policy types and estimate your budget. Universal life insurance policies may be more expensive than term insurance, but term insurance only includes protection without the cash value component.

Policy exclusions

If you see an ad for insurance quotes that seem too low to be true, there's probably a catch that you need to keep an eye on. Sometimes, policies don't pay benefits (or don't pay full amounts) if a recipient dies during the policy's early years. It may be best to look for plans that pay the full death benefit amount. You never know when tragedy might strike.

If you’re still unclear about the process involved in selecting a life insurance policy, find expert guidance. The factors that have been mentioned earlier can play a big part in how insurance policies are designed.
